Opening Remarks

Attendees will be expected to join the session within the first 5 minutes. Following this, explanations on interpreter etiquette and other important introductions to the NCDA conference will begin.

Beyond the Buzz: AI and Inclusive Deaf Education

Join Eyra Abraham in an informative session that explores artificial intelligence and its impact on deaf education. In today's world of continuous advancement of technologies, ensuring every student has access to quality education is crucial. This session explores the intersection of education, artificial intelligence, and inclusivity for supporting deaf and hard of hearing students with their learning. The presentation will outline both the positive and negative aspects of artificial intelligence in EdTech and beyond, with valuable insights for more inclusive and effective learning environments

ASL Mouth Morphemes

Join Richard Martell in the discussion of  American Sign Language (ASL), mouth morphemes. These are  non-manual markers that accompany signs to convey additional information such as intensity, size, shape, speed, or manner of an action or object. These morphemes are expressed through various movements or shapes of the lips, mouth, and sometimes the cheeks. Mouth morphemes are important in ASL as they provide nuances and convey nuances of meaning that may not be apparent solely through hand movements.

Eyra Abraham

 Presenter

Eyra Abraham is the founder of Lisnen, a startup changing the landscape of adaptive technologies for people with hearing loss using AI. Lisnen is developing an app that helps with situational awareness of critical sounds in the environment, like a fire alarm or siren, using their smart devices.  Eyra is one of several committee members to advance the inclusion of people with disabilities at both the federal and provincial levels and a steering committee member for Start Access, an initiative on AI equity with the American Association of People with Disabilities.
